Úvod do byzantské filosofie

se studií Michala Řoutila „Na východ od Antiochie. Řecké myšlení za hranicemi Byzance, 2.–8. století. Syrská tradice“

Author: Pavel Milko

The book “Introduction to the Byzantine Philosophy” is the first attempt in Czech to understand the development of philosophical thinking in the Byzantine realm – heir to Rome and the ancient tradition, and which existed for over a millenium and dominated the cultural development of medieval Europe. The book thoroughly analyses the links of Byzantine philosophy with the preceding period and, particulary, with the theological points of departure characteristic of the time. The polemic character of the work underlies its aim to achieve a novel evaluation, re-consideration and re-appraisal of paradigms of long standing.

The volume also includes M. Řoutil’s study “East of Antioch: Greek thought outside Byzantium in the 2nd–8th centuries – the Syriac tradition”, which considers the transfer of antique and early Byzantine learning into the Aramaic-speaking environment of Syria and Mesopotamia.
