The book “The Wisdom of Ethiopia: Amharic proverbs” comprises 201 Amharic proverbs in common use. Each proverb is printed in the Amharic fidäl script and furnished with a phonetic transcription, to enable readers unfamiliar with the Amharic alphabet to savour the sounds (and frequent rhymes) of the Amharic original. A Czech translation follows, and, wherever possible, equivalent Czech proverbs are provided. The present compilation is thus believed to be unique and the first of its kind.  The juxtaposition of the Amharic proverbs with their Czech counterparts bears witness to the universality of human thought and moral sensibility, since in either language we encounter essentially the same, or very similar, truths, life experiences, moral principles and imperatives, even though in each case the general sense of the proverbs is supported by features peculiar to the indigenous material and spiritual culture. Popular verbal art in general and proverbs in particular are amongst the innermost layers of ancient cultures; the reader is thus invited to become acquainted with the wisdom of the most populous Christian nation in Africa. The text is accompanied by thirty-one colour illustrations prepared by the academic painter Boris Jirků.
