Ephraim the Syrian: Hymns of Paradise

Translated by Mlada Mikulicová and Fr. Vladimír Mikulica.

The book contains the first complete translation from Syriac into Czech of twelve hymns of “Hymns of Paradise”, the shorter and more compact collection according to MS Vat. Syr. 112. The translations were made from Edmund Beck’s edition (Louvain, 1957) and supplied with explanatory notes. The main body of the Hymns is preceded with an introduction into St. Ephraim’s life and work, particularly noting the Syriac sources and the poetic structure of the hymns.

A chapter on the theology of “Hymns on Paradise” was provided by Fr. Jaroslav Brož, a scholar in the Biblical theology and Syriac patrology.

Czech poetic correction was made by Fr. Vladimír Mikulica.

The book includes bibliography, an index of Biblical citations, and a subject index.
